Frequently Asked Questions

What should I do if I have an emergency?

If you are experiencing an emergency you should call 9-1-1 immediately. The dispatcher will ask where is your emergency. It is important that you give the location of where the actual emergency is, and that when you give the address you state what municipality the emergency is in. This is important because if you call 9-1-1 from a cell phone it will go to the nearest dispatch center which may not be in the same municipality you are in. If you live in a building with multiple residential units you should provide the dispatcher with the accurate unit or apartment identifier.

The dispatcher will then ask what is your emergency. You can describe the situation. If it is a medical emergency, Union Emergency Medical Unit will be dispatched to your location.

What should I do while i wait for an ambulance?

It is helpful to emergency personnel if you turn on an exterior light, especially at night, so arriving apparatus can locate your residence. If you are able to, you, or someone else, should meet arriving personnel at the door in order for personnel to reach you quickly.

If you live in a building with multiple units or apartments, you, or someone else, should be near the intercom to provide entry for arriving personnel. If you live in a building that has a staffed front desk you should inform the employee that you have an emergency so they can quickly direct arriving personnel to your location.

Why do so many emergency vehicles come when I call 9-1-1?

Depending on the answers to the dispatcher’s questions, the dispatcher will attempt to send the nearest and most appropriate resources to help you with your emergency.

Union Township utilizes a tiered response to medical emergencies. In a life threatening emergency you may see these emergency vehicles:

  • First Responders: Units from the Union Police Department and/or Union Fire Department can provide quick life saving measures, but can not transport.
  • Basic Life Support: An ambulance from Union EMU or Union Fire Department can provide Basic Life Support and transport patients to the hospital.
  • Advanced Life Support: A paramedic ambulance or other response vehicle from a local hospital system can provide Advanced Life support. They may or may not be capable of transporting patients to the hospital.

In most emergencies, only a Basic Life Support ambulance is dispatched.
